Essential Reads to Understand America’s History, Present, and the Urgency of Now

Updated: 13 hours ago

In the wake of this recent election outcome in the United States, we find ourselves at a critical juncture. This election has brought to light the ongoing forces of racism, authoritarianism, and social division that continue to shape this country. As Black Americans, we cannot afford to ignore the impact of these events or the historical roots from which they spring. To understand the path forward, we must understand the history that has brought us to this moment.

To support you in this journey, I’ve created The AntiHR Reading List for 2024-2025.

This list is filled with powerful books that provide insights into America’s history of race relations, the dynamics of oppression, and the impact of authoritarian regimes. In light of the current political landscape, these works are more relevant than ever, serving as a guide to understanding not just the past but also the urgent challenges we face today.

The reading list includes well-known titles like The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Go Tell It on the Mountain, and lesser-known titles like The Wretched of the Earth, and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. In all 30 titles are included.

Some of these titles have even been banned in some places in the United States—a troubling reflection of how far some are willing to go to suppress narratives that challenge systems of power and lay bare uncomfortable truths. For Black Americans, reading these books is a form of resistance, empowerment, and preparation. Understanding our history gives us the insight to navigate the present and the strength to shape the future.

The Connection Between History and Today’s Political Climate

As we grapple with the reality of another Trump administration, it is essential to understand how historical forces of oppression, authoritarianism, and systemic racism have shaped today’s America. Books like The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt and Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome by Dr. Joy DeGruy offer a framework to interpret the dangers that may lie ahead. These books will help you recognize patterns, resist manipulation, and build resilience.

Next Steps: Read, Watch, and Act

In addition to diving into these essential books, I encourage you to watch my latest YouTube videos where I break down the significance of this election for Black Americans and what we must do next. For Black people—and Black women especially—our actions during this period are crucial. Our survival and resilience depend on our readiness to resist and respond to the changes ahead.

Our history is rich with resilience, courage, and the determination to overcome injustice. Let these books empower you with the knowledge you need to understand what is at stake in America today. This is only the beginning. Commit to reading, learning, and staying informed so that together, we can protect ourselves and continue to work toward a just and equitable future. Read these books, absorb their lessons, and let them guide your actions and decisions in the months and years to come.
